Jennifer Byrnes’ textile designs are a synthesis of traditional painting techniques in watercolors and oils, transformed by contemporary digital design techniques. Her design approach blends Eastern and Western art motifs into a global fashion style.

Born into an academic family in Harbin, China, Jennifer’s passion for design and color began at an early age. Her interests in fashion resulted in her studying knitting, crochet and embroidery while sewing clothes for family and friends.

Jennifer has a very unique background for a textile designer. She originally studied at Harbin Medical University in China. She practiced medicine for 13 years first at Heilongjiang Province Hospital as a diagnostic doctor and then at the Heilongjiang Province Traditional Medical Hospital as a Neurologist. Moving to the U.S. in 1996, Jennifer opened an Acupuncture practice in Los Angeles. Jennifer’s medical background in China and Los Angeles brings a global perspective to her design work.

In pursuit of a career in fashion design Jennifer expanded her education at Santa Monica College and the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in Los Angeles. Jennifer will graduate from the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in Los Angeles, in March 2011 with an Associate Art Degree in Textile Surface Design. Working with hand crafted, free hand painting and art techniques combined with advanced digital design skills acquired at FIDM resulted in graduating at the top of her class.

Jennifer’s daughter, Rose Byrnes is a creative, fashion designer. Rose is also a FIDM graduate, receiving a degree in Fashion Design in June 2010. Rose often collaborates with Jennifer on apparel designs and this has created a wonderful mother-daughter team and an inspiring family relationship.
